The Canaries International Jazz Festival attracts international world class musiciansIf Tenerife is the destination of your next business trip, try to go in July That is when the Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz & Mas Heineken (the Heineken Canaries International Jazz and More Festival) takes place. This jazz festival includes concerts across the Canaries and is a real treat for music fans, because of the breadth of the music on offer.
The festival started off fairly modestly in 1992, with a few local bands from Gran Canaria playing on that island. It grew year by year and quickly began to attract international artists. They were attracted by the vibe and the wonderful climate of this group of islands. The festival now includes around twenty different concerts across all the islands including La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, although the bulk of the events are held in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
The event still attracts a wide number of local musicians who relish the chance to show off their unique twist on traditional jazz to a wider audience. The organisers like to mix things up, frequently asking a big name artist to play alongside local musicians. As you might expect from jazz musicians, this opportunity to improvise with artists coming from different places is something the musicians really seem to relish and it frequently results in some superb jam sessions. International musicians who have played the festival include Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Randy Crawford, Al Jarreau and Chuck Loeb.
