A City of Style: Madrid
The friendly populace of Madrid will make you feel at home even as you visit the sites.Spain’s premier style city is Madrid, the home to high culture and wild nightlife.
One of Spain’s friendliest and most open cities, Madrid’s motto is ‘If you’re in Madrid, you’re from Madrid’, and this is never made more obvious than if you have lost your way. Suddenly, when asking for directions, you will feel you have become a local. The city’s populace is home to thousands not originally from Madrid, and this gives them a sense of tolerance that will make any visitor to the city feel right at home.
Madrid’s astonishing collection of museum and art galleries is a must visit for any art lover. Picasso’s world famous ‘Guernica’ finds its home in the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, an art gallery full of fantastic art pieces.
The Plaza Mayor is a beautiful example of the stunning architecture present in Madrid; the buildings stand high above, fantastic in their grandeur, but the entire square is a thing of beauty; from the outdoor tables of the restaurants and bars to the students lounging in the sunshine.
Plaza de la Cebada gives a taste of what medieval Madrid must have been like. Once home to the Muslim population of the city – and, after the Christian Conquest of the city, the site of a Muslim cemetery - this square later became the site of hundreds of public executions.
Take a boat ride in Parque del Buen Retiro, a garden of El Retiro’s. Scattered with marble statues and elegantly manicured lawns, the gardens are peaceful during the week and filled with locals strolling and enjoying themselves during the weekend.
