Munich: Introducing Germany's Bavarian Beauty
Discover Bavaria's finest city in all it's splendour. Just north of the Alps in Germany’s southern state of Bavaria lies Munich, a bustling hub of spectacular German architecture, innovation and financial savvy. Home to the 1972 Olympics and a candidate for the 2018 Winter Olympics, Munich is properly equipped for all sports, with a particular passion for football. However, arguably the biggest draw to this city is its love of beer festivals, and Oktoberfest is Munich’s grandest festival of them all.
Much more than a giant tent full of drunken men in folk costumes, Oktoberfest is an all-round pleaser, with Tuesday holding entertainment for all the family on Family Day, and traditional Bavarian parades on the first Sunday of the festival. Throughout the festival, which lasts just over 2 full weeks every September-October, there are various traditional amusements held such as the flea circus and crossbow competitions.
Oktoberfest is spread out across 14 large tents, each with their own atmosphere and clientele. The beer producers must abide by the German Purity Law so you can expect excellent quality, natural beer without nasty chemical additives.
Munich has plenty more to offer visitors throughout the year besides celebrating their love of making fine beer. For film lovers, the Munich Film Festival is well worth a glimpse. Held every year towards the end of June for a week, this is one of Germany’s biggest film events, screening a vast amount of premieres, retrospectives, films from the small screen and much more. Unlike its slightly pretentious cousin Cannes, here members of the public are encouraged to attend and experience this giant film fest.
Lufthansa offer daily direct flights from Birmingham to Munich, flight time is just under a comfortable 2 hours.
