Times Square is the heart of the city and 26 million visitors walk these streets every year. It is the centre of the Broadway theatre district with plenty of fine dining restaurants and cosy cafes. Go at sunset when the giant billboard and all the other lights come on and the crowds add an air of joie de vive to the festive square.
If Times Square is the heart of the city, then the Grand Central Terminal is the hub where visitors travelling from Glasgow to New York City can see this National Historic Landmark in its original glory. Restoration was completed in 1998 after New Yorkers, such as Brendan Gill and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, spent years galvanising a restoration of the old station, originally built in 1913.
Take a day and wander through Central Park, where 843 acres of gardens, water fountains, walking paths and open spaces create an oasis of tranquillity as the sounds of the city fade away.
For a great tour around some of the islands that make up the city, take the Staten Island Ferry for a cruise from Battery Park to Staten Island. This commuter ferry offers astonishing views of Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the New York Harbor and lower Manhattan.
Other free attractions include the New York Public Library, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Federal Reserve Bank and Rockefeller Center.
