Amsterdam: the cultural capital of Europe
Amsterdam is the cultural centre of Europe with festivals, family fun and fashion!Amsterdam is renowned for its individual culture, with a relaxed attitude to smoking marijuana in licensed cafés and a booming red light district. But there is so much more to see and do in Amsterdam and throughout the year you will find a plethora of music, dance, art, fashion and sporting festivals to whet all of our appetites.
This European historical city is fully equipped to host indoor and outdoor shows alike, and it takes full advantage. Just a handful of the dozens of annual festivals include the Torentijd Festival, a family-friendly 2-day event in June held on the open square between the Golden Lion and Groenhoven Tower, featuring dance, music and theatre performances.
June time also features the well-established Amsterdam Roots Festival, a 5-day world music festival attracting around 60,000 music-lovers from across the globe. The festival takes place across 5 venues and includes a free all-day open air event in the Oosterpark.
If you are looking for the ultimate cultural celebration, the month-long Holland Festival is held every June and is the highlight of the Dutch performing arts calendar. Opera, theatre, dance and music all feature with up to 80 performances in major venues such as the Muziektheater and the Theatre Bellevue.
Amsterdam’s NDSM shipyard hosts a range of underground cultural events throughout the year. VOLTT LOVES SUMMER every August serves up everything from electronic beats to two-step, reggae and dub.
Let's not forget that Amsterdam also has its very own International Fashion Week every July, standing alongside Paris, London, Milan and New York.
