Spend Your Summer Holiday at the Hellenic Festival
The Hellenic Festival in Athens lasts all summer and provides plenty of entertainment. If you are thinking about a trip to Athens, you may want to consider visiting during the annual Hellenic Festival. It is one of the longest festivals in Europe, starting in early June and ending in late September. During that time a variety of concert, theatre, ballet and other cultural events take place. The ease and speed of the trip from London Gatwick to Athens makes attending this amazing festival all the more convenient.
This event, known in Greece as the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, was begun in the 1950s; however, several political upheavals prevented the festival from being held from year to year on a regular basis, and it was discontinued for a time. The festival was begun again in 2006, taking on a broader approach to the performing arts than the previous festivals had, and has since attracted attendees from all across Europe and beyond.
One of the more interesting aspects of this festival is the number of local theatres and other venues that are used. Some of the venues include the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Onassis Cultural Centre.
The concerts include performances of classical music by symphony orchestras from Greece and abroad; in addition to these concerts, opera performances are a regular feature.
The theatrical and dance performances are also quite noteworthy. Both one-man plays and performances with full theatrical casts will satisfy the interests of theatre lovers. If you appreciate dance, you can see both classical ballet and contemporary dance performances at this amazing festival.
