The World's Best New Year's Eve Party
If New Year's Eve usually seems too short, why not celebrate in Edinburgh where the party lasts four days? Edinburgh is reached via a short flight from Gatwick Airport and the city offers an incomparable blend of heritage and cutting edge culture.
Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebration as they are traditionally called, has been dubbed the world's best New Year's Eve party. Things kick off on December 30th with a funfair and carnival. The evening sees the start of the celebrations, when a torchlight procession winds its way through the city's cobbled streets from the Royal Mile through to Carlton Hill where there is a massive firework display. Anyone can join in the procession if they buy a torch and there are tens of thousands of participants every year, stretching for miles through the streets.
The following day is the main event when Edinburgh plays host to some of the world's top bands playing in Princes Street Gardens. There is also ceilidh dancing and the famous Edinburgh Street Party where tens of thousands of people from all over the world take to the streets. At midnight, link arms with your new friends and sing Auld Lang Syne when the clock strikes midnight and one of the biggest firework displays in the world lights up the sky.
There is no rest on New Years' Day either; there is a run downhill to Holyrood Park or if you are feeling like you really need waking up, join in the Loony Dook when people fling themselves into the Firth of Forth. There are more concerts to attend in the evening too.
