Glasgow, an award winning city of festivals
Glasgow has more to offer than castles and historical monuments. It is a vibrant city of festivals and events that are sure to suite every taste. A lively and entertaining city, Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and is the UK’s second largest retail centre. The city is filled with hundreds of independent shops, boutiques, and stores where shopping enthusiasts will be able to find anything and everything.
Glasgow is especially noted for its beautiful architecture and for this, was awarded the prestigious UK City of Architecture and Design award. Combine this architecture with the city's impressive waterfront and meandering River Clyde and you will quickly see why so many people choose flights from London Gatwick to Glasgow.
This city is constantly hosting events with full venues providing various entertainment. For traditional events, there are many theatres that include King’s, Pavilion, Tron, Citizens, Mitchell, Crawfurd and Ranshorn. There is also the Royal Concert Hall on Buchanan Street that regularly attracts top artists. It is no surprise that Glasgow won the European City of Culture award in 1990. UNESCO also appointed it the City of Music in 2008.
Glasgow hosts numerous festivals each year. Check out the Celtic Connections, which lasts for three weeks or the Jazz Festival, Glasgay or the West End Festival, which is the city’s largest and most popular event. This festival attracts approximately 150,000 people with more than 500 events in 75 locations across the city. Glasgow also hosts the annual World Pipe Band Championship each August. This particular event attracts more than 8,000 musicians.
