Belfast celebrates its maritime history with festival
Maritime history is an important part of Belfast’s culture. The city of Belfast is known for its rich maritime history and boasts some of the most famous and infamous ships as being creations of the Northern Irish people. The infamous ship the Titanic was built here in the early 19th century and became, at the time, the finest testament to shipbuilding in the world. Despite its tragic demise, the city of Belfast has always been known for producing quality ships and its culture has been indelibly linked to the sea.
This rich heritage is celebrated every summer at the Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival. The city will cater for some of the most magnificent ships to ever sail the high seas, including the Lord Nelson and the notorious Bounty. Historical showcases of the Titanic will be on display as well, both celebrating and remembering Belfast’s unique part in this event. The Titanic Bus Tours will bring the story of the historic sinking to life on Queen’s Island.
Children will also find many activities to their liking, making it a perfect event for the family. From a touch tank where they can explore underwater marine life to pirate themed dancing and outdoor games, families are sure to enjoy the festival.
The International market is one of the most highly-anticipated events during the festival. Traders from Europe and beyond dock on Queen’s Quay where a bounty of wares can be purchased, and the entire city is charged with a celebratory atmosphere during the three-day long festival.
