Colombo - A different Asian experience
As an ancient Asian city filled with deep history, a diverse culture, and friendly people, Colombo offers something different from most traditional Asian cities.Located on the west side of the island of Sri Lanka, Colombo is a busy and vibrant city. It’s mixture of modern life and ancient ruins make it an essential attraction for those who enjoy Asian culture and history.
Adding significant beauty to the city is its large harbour, which is strategically positioned for maximising use of the sea trade routes. Traders knew of this city more than 2,000 years ago but it was not until recently that Colombo became the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.
The city of Colombo is more than just about trading. It is a beautiful city filled with friendly faces and busy streets with active people going about their daily lives. Amongst the traffic-filled streets are magnificent architectural pieces that show its rich influences from the Dutch, Portuguese, British, and Indian, with many contemporary buildings that date back to the 17th century.
Colombo is also filled with annual celebrations, one of the most beautiful is known as Buddha’s Birth. It is locally referred to as Vesak in Sinhala. During this time, the entire city is decorated with lights, various lanterns, and other special displays of Thoran, or lights.
This seven-day celebration takes place each May when flights from London Heathrow to Colombo are easily obtained. These wondrous lantern displays are viewed by thousands of Sri Lankans as they compete for the best decoration prizes. The week is also filled with a variety of free local food that is offered in Dunsals or charity locations.
