Entebbe Lake Victoria Triathlon

EntebbeA hidden gem in a stopover to Kampala

Entebbe is built on the shores of Lake Victoria and is home to the Lake Victoria Triathlon, which is held annually in September. The triathlon consists of a 1,000 metre swim, which begins from the beach at Entebbe Sailing Club, a 10km run and a 30km cycle ride. Teams consist of individuals and groups of two or three people. Teams from local businesses also take part. Cyclists are advised to ride mountain bikes as the local terrain can be rough.

With several weekly flights to Entebbe from Heathrow with British Airways, there is much for travellers to do, and competitors in the triathlon are given a tour of local beauty spots and the Botanical Gardens to study its birds, trees, and a troop of colobus monkeys.

The easiest way to get around and see the sights of Entebbe is by the local boda-boda, or motorcycle taxi, and a popular destination for tourists is the Cafe Bavariana. It is open six days a week, from Monday to Saturday, and the cafe is proud of its organic free-trade coffee, which it buys from the Rwanda border and its gorilla-clad slopes. The cafe sells not only coffee, but fresh fruit and authentic sweet-smelling black German bread. There are a host of establishments offering a variety of food from Indian cuisine to English breakfasts, from Chinese to Italian dishes, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
