Karachi, city of contrasts and beauty, exotic coastline and gateway to the East. Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan and is situated on the Arabian Sea. Originally a small fishing port the city has expanded to become the financial centre of the country, as well as a base for visitors, thanks to its glamorous hotels and exotic nightlife.
Flights to Karachi from London Heathrow operate every other day and take about eight and a half hours with, a stopover in either Saudi Arabia or Sri Lanka. Some 20 million people live in Karachi, so, as you can imagine, it is a bustling and hectic place to be. As well as delicious Pakistani restaurants, other cultures and cuisines are well represented; with gourmet delights from China, Greece, Mexico and Italy; there is even one restaurant, called 'Mr Cod', offering fish and chips, just in case you are feeling homesick.
Cricket is more than a sport in Pakistan, it is more akin to an obsession; turn down any street and you will catch street cricket games being contested. If a big match is on, why not visit the city’s National Stadium? Karachi also has a huge array of sports shops, which might prove useful if you are looking for a bargain
Most of the population use the extensive public bus system, but there are also many taxis for hire; it is best to negotiate the fare with the driver before setting off on your travels around the city
The Masjid e Tooba, the largest single domed mosque in the world is located in Karachi and is well worth a visit, but remember to go suitably dressed.
