The Safari Sevens, held annually in Nairobi, is Africa’s premier rugby tournament.Travellers to Nairobi in November can be a part of a unique three-day event. The annual Kenya Rugby Union Safaricom Sevens is held at the RFUEA Ground and draws top sevens rugby-playing nations who will qualify to be part of the opening segments of the HSBC Sevens World Series in Dubai and South Africa in December. Formerly held in June, the event was moved to November to allow more international clubs and teams to take part.
Started by a group of rugby devotees in 1996, the Safari Sevens, a 7-a-side rugby tournament, is considered Africa’s premier event. Administered by Kenya’s Rugby Football Union, the Safari Sevens attracts more than 20,000 fans every year, all eager to watch their favourite teams and players compete. The annual tournament is challenged by national teams in Africa, as well as professional and amateur teams, universities, schools and even military teams. Players who excel in seven-a-side, a shorter version of rugby, are noted for their speed, agility and general athleticism.
The focal point of the three-day tournament is the Safari Village, which continues to grow in popularity over the years. Thousands of fans join in the after-match festivities featuring local, regional, and national musicians performing in numerous concerts.
