Basler’s Fasnacht is the perfect holiday for honeymooners
Basler’s annual Fasnacht is a festival of music and art, a romantic event for honeymoonersOn the Monday following Ash Wednesday, Basler will come alive with a rarely seen calm, sombre and mysteriously beautiful celebration known as Basler Fasnacht. Unlike New Orleans’ Mardi Gras or German’s Karneval, Basler’s Frasnacht is a dignified affair, with emphasis on the solemn beauty of the participants and their skill.
Beginning at 4AM, the street lights go out, and the traditional bands playing military drums and piccolos set out on a parade through the packed streets of the old part of town. Holidaymakers would do well to arrive early and expect crowds. Flash photography is discouraged during the somewhat grave procession, but the beauty of the traditional costumes and masks as well as the skilful music will lighten the mood considerably.
Two to three hours after the parade begins, it comes to its slow conclusion. The parades will be repeated on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Holidaymakers should take special note of the hand painted lanterns carried by the bands. Each lantern is created by a local artist, and the musicians take as much pride in them as in their music.
In the evenings, the parade routes become less defined, and the cliquen (bands) will wander the alleys, creating a romantic atmosphere. Tuesday morning, visitors to Basler from Manchester will find things changing once more as the Guggemusig, noisy brass bands that play off key, come out to amuse the children.
The party begins in earnest then, as the neighbourhoods come alive with music and festivities. Holidaymakers would do well to spend time simply observing the beautiful artwork and enjoying the music of this timeless festival.
