A vibrant city where there are more than pyramids on display.The administrative capital of Egypt is easily accessible from the UK with daily flights to Cairo from Manchester. It is the obvious place to use a base for visiting the pyramids and for journeys further into the heart of Egypt. There are over 100 pyramids in the country, most of which are centred around Cairo; they were built around the same period of the 3rd Dynasty. There are various tours available to tourists, which allow you to see the most famous pyramids; however, it is always advisable to find out what the approximate prices are before you part with any money, as charges can vary considerably.
There is much more to Cairo than just the pyramids and the city is host to various festivals throughout the year. Each August there is the Wafaa Al-Nil Festival, which means Fidelity of the Nile. This is a time where local people remember the ancient traditions of human sacrifice to the river in order to guarantee a profitable harvest. In modern times, however, it is celebrated with music, arts, culture and a gathering of people having a great time.
Another exciting event in the annual calendar is the Pharaoh’s Rally. This takes place every Oct and is a 3,000km race around the Sahara desert, which attracts entrants and spectators from all over the world. This event is free to watch, but to participate in requires an entry fee of around $3000.
Cairo is also host to many music, theatre and other arts festivals and you are guaranteed to find something to capture your interest whilst visiting this vast and exciting city.
