Moscow, a fascinating blend of old and new.
Moscow, capital of culture, cuisine and stunning architectureThe Russian capital is an increasingly popular destination as it is easily accessible from Britain, with scheduled flights to Moscow from Manchester and several other UK airports. A centre for art and culture, Moscow has an array of attractions for visitors. The Bolshoi Theatre is synonymous with the city and the grand re-opening of this majestic wonder is due to take place in October 2011. However, the theatre’s website should be reviewed before making any definite plans. When it is open to the public it hosts ballet, opera, concerts and is also available for private hire, although you will have to dress appropriately to fit in!
Another Russian icon is St Basil's Cathedral, which was designed by Ivan the Terrible and finished in 1561. Its full title is "The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat" and it is to be found in Red Square. Visitors will marvel at this spectacular building, which is now a museum; it is open to the public all year round, apart from Tuesdays, though this can be subject to change, so check before you go.
Moscow has a heady mix of culinary delights available from its numerous restaurants and cafes, so you are almost certain to find something to please your taste buds. Some restaurants in the tourist areas can be very expensive, but often have a business lunch option, which can be considerably cheaper. Many of the restaurants that are attached to bars will allow you to sample Russian beers, some of which you will not see outside of Moscow. The waiters will usually be able to provide a little information on each, if you ask nicely.
