Being the southern hemisphere’s oldest cultural event (founded in 1953 by the University of West Australia), PIAF has earned itself quite an (enviable) reputation.Year after year, it continues to attract big names, such as the beloved Ernie Dingo, legendary jazzman Pat Metheny and the notorious Kneehigh Theatre, while boasting innovative and top-quality entertainment.
Kicking off in February with astounding displays of fireworks, pyrotechnics and acrobatics on the streets of Perth, it continues for three weeks, dazzling the senses and provoking imagination, to be concluded by another firework show. Well over a thousand music, dance, film, visual arts, theatre and literature performances from all around the world are featured in various locations across Western Australia, centering around its capital.
TheFestival prides itself on reaching out deep into and embracing the community. It brings extraordinary art into everyday life, helps to promote local artists and celebrates indigenous culture.
The live music program is ensured to cater to all music tastes; the audience is treated to jazz, acoustic, alternative, rock and chamber music. From family street theatre to a writer’s festival, screenings of award-winning films, children's events, musicals, exhibitions by local and international artists, musicals and visual arts performances of all kinds, no area of entertainment is left out.
