Dusseldorf’s Japan Day Blends Japanese and German Culture

Offering celebrations of Japanese culture and art, the festivities attract over a million people every year to the city, which has the largest Japanese community in Germany. Although the event only lasts for one day, it creates an amazing atmosphere in the historic city for visitors of all nationalities and age groups.
The celebration of Japan Day focuses on bringing to light the distinct culture of the Japanese people, many of whom have lived and worked in Dusseldorf for generations. Traditional dance performances in full Japanese costumes are featured, along with sumo wrestling competitions and origami displays. The event culminates in the evening with an extremely large fireworks display over the city, lighting it up with some of the most vibrant colours seen anywhere in Germany.
Japanese cuisine is also a featured part of this exciting event, and the many stalls and restaurants offering these tasty delights provide a taste of Japanese culture. Other booths throughout the city feature Japanese arts and crafts, as well as many other vendors selling wares of all types, from food to souvenirs.
