Aberdeen International Youth Festival Promotes Arts
Young people from around the world travel to Aberdeen, Scotland to attend this celebration of dance and music.
Every summer, the Aberdeen International Youth Festival brings more than 1,000 of the world's talented young people to Scotland for its largest cultural event of the year. More than 30,000 tourists flock to Aberdeen for this festival, which features artists and performers from dozens of countries around the globe -- more than 70 in all so far. Taking place in the north-eastern section of Scotland, the festival consists of over 70 separate events including a parade, community venues, open-air performances, and dozens of ticketed events that include dance performances, concerts, and galas.
The venues themselves are another attraction of the festival. Performances take place in such august locations as His Majesty's Theatre, Queen's Cross Church, and the Music Hall of Aberdeen. There is also a programme that tours the surrounding countryside, bringing festival events out to rural towns and villages.
One of the more creative outreaches of the festival is the Dance Summer School, which for more than 25 years has provided intensive dance instruction to students aged 12 through 16, along with performance courses for more advanced students. Teachers in the Dance Summer School have included world luminaries who arrive from such notable dance companies as the Bolshoi Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet School. Classes in the accompanying Dance Lab programme include not just ballet and jazz but also improvisational styles such as hip-hop.
