The Crop Over Carnival is an exciting and colourful festival in Bridgetown in July

The most colourful and popular festival in Barbados is the summer Crop Over festival, starting in July and lasting for about five weeks. The festival started as a celebration of the end of the sugar harvest in the 1780s and was revived in 1974 mixed with other features of the culture of Barbados. The festival attracts thousands of people from around the world to this fabulous holiday destination.

The people of Bridgetown dress up in multicoloured costumes and body paint, and dance to Caribbean soca music in the streets as the climax to the festival on Grand Kadooment Day. The island’s cultural diversity is shown in the festival with exhibitions, parades, street markets, concerts and all night parties called bashments. Entertainment includes stilt-walkers, music – calypso, ring band, tuk and steel pan – locally brewed beer and rum, and the energy of the friendly locals.

Festival highlights include the crowning of the King and Queen of the Crop, the decorated cart parade, weekly Calypso Tent shows, daily fetes, the Junior Kadooment Parade, the Junior Calypso Monarch competition, and Bridgetown Market.

Bridgetown is a lively city, with a blend of modern and historic buildings mixed with markets, lush gardens and monuments, making it a great tourist destination.

Bridgetown airport is the only port of entry for people arriving and departing by air from Barbados. It is an important airport for people meeting up with their cruise ships and has flights arriving from many cities in the United States, Canada, Central America, South America and Europe.
