Popular resort draws large surfing crowds
Thousand flock to Biarritz for the annual Surf Festival
Located on the Bay of Biscay, in southwest France, the city of Biarritz has long been a popular seaside destination for tourists visiting the country. With a population of less than 30,000 Biarritz became something of an exclusive resort following the opening of a casino there in 1901. It brought an increased tourist trade to the town, as well as a lively nightlife, which has continued to thrive over the years. This stylish resort is also very popular with surfers and many flock to the area every year for the Biarritz Surf Festival.
The popular annual Biarritz Surf Festival takes place during the summer and attracts thousands of spectators to the area. Although the event is primarily focussed on surfing, there are plenty of other water sports available to people of all abilities, from beginners to professionals. Demonstrations are organised and beginners can try their hand at sports including tandem surfing, paddle board racing and bodysurfing.
In addition to the sporting events, there are plenty of other activities centred around the festival. Film screenings, live music and dance performances are ongoing throughout the event, while parties on the beach go well into the night, with plenty of food and drink being available. The festival has a different theme each year and offers a great variety of entertainment for old and young alike.
While a beautiful seaside destination at any time of the year, Biarritz is an exciting place to be during the annual surfing festival, with plenty to do. A great number of international visitors flock to the area to enjoy the huge beach party.
