Billund, the home of LEGO
Home of LEGO, Billund can definitely be described as being a family friendly destination
Tourism guides and websites throw around the term “family-friendly” all the time, as a way to entice parents travelling with children to visit their destination. However, few cities could ever come close to beating Billund when it comes to family and child-friendly holiday destinations, because it is home to the internationally renowned LEGO company. Children from around the world all instantly recognise the colourful plastic building blocks that help boost their creativity and keep them occupied and entertained for hours.
Established in 1932, LEGO was founded in Billund by Kirk Kristiansen and his family. They chose the LEGO name for a two main reasons. First, “leg godt” means “play well” in Danish, but in Latin the term also refers to assembling things.
Perhaps not surprisingly, one of Billund’s most popular tourist attractions is LEGOLAND Park, which features incredibly detailed miniature replicas of all of the world’s most famous tourist attractions. Visitors to the park will also find Denmark’s largest 4D cinema and in interactive medieval theatre. There is an on-site hotel, for visitors looking to spend as much time as possible checking out the interactive displays, trying the rides or exploring the ocean floor, as part of the unique 4D cinematic experience. LEGOLAND is open from late March to October, though some exhibits remain open throughout the winter months.
Parents looking introduce a little relaxation and variety into their visit may enjoy Lalandia, one of Denmark’s largest water parks and resort complexes. Guests enjoy a 10,000sqm water park, with indoor and outdoor pools, water slides and hot tubs for couples looking for a relaxing, romantic break.
