Corfu an Island Paradise
Visit Corfu and Drink, Eat and Dance Long into the Night at a Traditional Greek Festival
Corfu has long been a popular destination with British and foreign tourists alike. Corfu has some beautiful beaches and the good weather makes it a popular beach destination for revellers and families.
Corfu’s calendar has a number of significant festivals, most of which are traditional and religious and the island is a popular destination during the festival season. The peak time for festivals is the summer, but for those who want to travel at another time of the year, there are plenty of local festivals. The seasonal festivals are very popular and many take place around the main beach resorts where the beautiful coastal scenery provides a stunning backdrop for the festivities. Agios Mattheos is particularly well known for its night-long celebrations held on August 6th and tourists in the area at this time are advised not to miss the festivities. Agios Mattheos is built on the lower slopes of a mountain and is encircled by fruit and wild olive trees. The village itself has plenty of personality with traditional cafes lining the main street. A short distance away is the beautiful sandy beach of Paramonas. The night-long festival in August is when the entire village seems to be out on the streets with friends, neighbours and relatives, all meeting up for feasting and drinking. Live bands play music and everyone can join in the dancing regardless of whether they know the steps or not.
