Travellers who choose to welcome in the New Year in Charlotte, North Carolina have the opportunity do so in a different way than many people are used to. Charlottes First Night New Year’s Eve event offers a fun-filled evening of music, dance, art and more in a safe and alcohol-free environment.
Annually attracting crowds of over 150,000 people, Charlotte’s imaginative and exciting First Night celebration takes place on New Year’s Eve from mid-afternoon until after midnight. Both children and adults can enjoy a fantastic variety of entertainment as the old year fades and a new one begins.
The award-winning First Night celebrations in Charlotte begin at around 3:00 pm, with family events and activities which involve music, dance, theatre, history and science held at ImaginOn, the Levine Museum of the New South, City Market and Discovery Place. Bringing these afternoon events to a close and providing younger children who can’t stay up for the real thing with the opportunity to welcome in the New Year is the mini-countdown to midnight.
The excitement then continues into the night, with the People’s Processional Parade until 8:00 pm. The evening’s programme then begins with live indoor and outdoor performances from musicians, dancers, comedians, magicians and aerialists. Local, regional and national performing artists of all kinds ensure that there is something for everyone. The finale to the evening festivities is the countdown just before midnight.
Admission to all the events is through the purchase of wristbands that can be bought in advance or on New Year’s Eve. There is no alcohol served or allowed at any of the venues participating in the First Night event.
