Visiting Colombo during the Vel Festival is a great way of getting an insight into Sri Lankan culture and traditions, as well as being a spectacular visual display and great fun. Whilst the city is mesmerizing at any time of year, experiencing this festival is a must if you get the chance.
The Vel Festival takes place annually in July and August, and is a Hindu celebration dedicated to the god of war. Events include colourful processions through the streets, which are led by a statue of the god pulled by two bulls. It is also possible to see elephant parades, traditional dances, fireworks displays and many other entertainments, and there is much music and dancing in the streets. The celebrations are especially lively in areas around the city’s temples, and the best experience is to be found there.
As a major city (and the former capital) in Sri Lanka, Colombo is easy to get to and has good transport links to international destinations. From the Bandaranaike International Airport it is easy to get flights to major cities all over Asia, as well as transport hubs in Europe such as London, Paris and Rome and other locations worldwide.
Sri Lanka has a great deal to offer visitors in terms of culture and heritage, as well as beautiful landscapes and fascinating sights. Visiting the area during the Vel Festival is the perfect way to get a feel for the culture of Sri Lanka whilst exploring this intriguing island.
