The Charleston literary festival

Every year the wonderful literary heritage of Charleston is celebrated in a festival that lasts for ten days. There are talks from writers, workshops, lectures, performances and discussions during the ten-day event. The event has been held in Charleston for more than 20 years and is open for anyone to attend.

The festival takes place at the Charleston Farmhouse which was the country home of the Bloomsbury group that, as well as writers, includes artists and intellectuals. Attending the festival are many well-known writers and artists who are available for signings after their events. Within the grounds of the farmhouse there is an artist’s garden, where the main events of the festival take place.

During the ten days, there is a festival tea tent that serves a selection of hot and cold refreshments as well as a fully licenced bar that is available before and after all of the events.

The location of the festival is very rural so the access to the event is via a single track farm road. There is a shuttle bus service available from Lewes Train Station that takes visitors direct to the farmhouse.

In Charleston, there are many options for accommodation and anyone whose destination is the festival can stay within Charleston City and arrange for travel to the farmhouse location. Travelling to Charleston from any United Kingdom airport will not have a direct journey as the destination airport is only accessible by taking a domestic flight into Charleston airport.
