New York Sports for Visitors
Take in your favourite sporting event when visiting New York City.
When people visit New York City, they often think of the shopping, dining or arts scenes, but an often overlooked area is sports. New York has replaced the venerable Yankee Stadium with a newer one right next door, and catching a Yankees baseball game—whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em—is an experience to be savoured. If you love baseball but hate the Yankees, there is always a Mets game played at Citi Field. It’s just about 15 minutes from Penn Station on the Long Island Railroad, and the train stops right in front of the stadium.
Want to see American football? From pre-season games in July and August to the regular season that runs from September through the playoffs in January, you can watch the New York Giants AND the New York Jets play at the Meadowlands Stadium on Long Island. They are the only two American football teams who share a stadium.
If you prefer basketball, the New York Knicks and the New York Liberty (Women’s NBA team) play at Madison Square Garden, which is, of course, a premier sporting locale for everything from boxing to ice hockey games. Ice hockey is played by the New York Islanders, who play at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, and the New York Rangers whose home ice is the iconic Madison Square Garden.
Football, or as the Americans call it, soccer, is alive and well in New York with the Red Bulls team in Major League Soccer play. Their games are at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from New York City.
