The City of Palms'

FMY, Fort MyersThink of Edison and shine a light on the attractions of Fort Myers!

When science works in harmony with nature, great things can happen, and the light bulb can be invented! All of this happened because an inventor chose a good holiday destination!

In 1858, Thomas Alva Edison was cruising Florida’s west coast when he landed at a small town. Edison was so enchanted that he built his home and laboratory, Seminole Lodge, on the banks of the Caloosatchee River at Fort Myers. He greatly admired nature, which he felt offered a limitless source of discovery and became famous for inventing the light bulb. Through his efforts, royal palms were imported and planted and Fort Myers became known as the ‘City of Palms’.

Today the City of Palms is a popular destination for lovers of beaches, fishing, golf and shopping.

At secluded beaches visitors can swim or build sandcastles, collect fabulous shells on Sanibel and Captiva islands or visit the Bonita Beach dog park – a stretch along the shore on the edge of Lover's Key State Park where dogs are welcome to play in the shallow, gentle water of the Gulf of Mexico.

With lots of family-friendly attractions, restaurants and resorts in Fort Myers and surrounding areas, you can enjoy ‘Edison Mall’ – South-west Florida's largest indoor shopping centre, which has major department stores and almost 200 speciality shops.

On Fort Myers Beach, Times Square is the centre of a pedestrian shopping area. On the islands of Sanibel and Captiva, Periwinkle Place beckons with shops for art and fashion, and a lovely atmosphere featuring covered walkways and cafés shaded by banyan trees.
