Fiesta on Menorca
There are some great fiestas on Menorca, including the Fiesta Sant Llorenc with is amazing displays of horsemanship
Every year, during the first weekend after the 10th August, Alaior on the popular holiday destination of Menorca holds the Sant Llorenc Fiesta. This fiesta is packed full of entertainment, including dancing and concerts, and culminates with a horse race. Horses are a major feature of the fiesta with amazing displays of horsemanship throughout the weekend. The highlight is the Jaleo, where the horsemen get their mounts to rear up on their hind legs in the middle of the streets crowded with people. This colourful fiesta also includes a spectacular parade of floats. This holiday goes back to the time of the conquest of Menorca in 1287 by King Alfonso III, known as the Liberal (el Liberal).
Menorca has many tempting attractions dotted all over the island, which are often very close to the popular beaches and tourist resorts. The best way to see the island is to take an hour-long cruise from Mahon harbour. The guided tours of the Xoriguer Distillery offer an insight into how the local gin is produced. On the west of the island, in Ciutadella, is the Placa Alfons III with its charming old windmill.
The gardens and park of Es Freginal are in the centre of the capital, Mahon. Es Freginal has stunning flower displays and lawns, and is often used for cultural events. The summer jazz festival is a very popular attraction.
Menorca’s airport is just outside Mahon and is busy during the summer months when flights arrive from all over Europe, bringing tourists to this popular holiday destination.
