The annual Red Earth Festival is the only event of its kind throughout the country. For three days in June the destination of Oklahoma City becomes the epicentre of Native American culture and art in the US.

The festival began in 1987 and has grown in popularity since that time. Over 1200 American Indian artists and dancers from North America come together in order to celebrate their heritage, not only within America but the world. Since it began, the Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival has become more and more respected in terms of the forms of art it provides. Visitors can marvel at work from the best artists in the nation. It is even possible to purchase traditional pieces, including jewellery, beadwork, sculpture, pottery, basketry and paintings.

As well as exhibitions and markets, there is a dance competition in which Northern and Southern tribes compete against each other. Dancers at the festival represent a number of the world's most accomplished and this is an unique opportunity to witness such a dance off. Visitors to Oklahoma City can admire the tribal dress and skills presented by each tribe. There is also a 5 km Red Earth Run which follows the Oklahoma River.

The Red Earth Festival is opened by a grand parade which is witnessed by crowds numbering up to 100,000. Downtown, the Native American tribal spirit saturates this destination. Representatives from over 100 tribes take to the streets donned in their traditional tribal dress.
