The Philadelphia St Patrick’s Day Parade

PHL, PhiladelphiaCelebrate St Patrick's Day in Philadelphia with the annual parade

The largest parade in Philadelphia is the St Patrick’s Day Parade. 20,000 people take part in the parade from more than 150 groups including Irish associations, floats, dance groups, youth groups and marching bands. The parade takes place every year on the Sunday before St Patrick’s Day in March. The first St Patrick’s Day parade in Philadelphia took place in 1771 and there were 70,000 Irish immigrants living in Philadelphia by 1850. People dressed in green line the route to enjoy the religious and cultural celebrations.

Parade entrants can win a series of awards, including awards for the most outstanding float and the group that shows the spirit of the parade best. The St Patrick’s Day parade makes Philadelphia a holiday destination not to be missed in March. After the parade, people continue to celebrate in the bars around the town. Irish pubs like Fado are particularly crowded.

There is so much to see in Philadelphia, making it a very interesting holiday destination. Most places in and around Philadelphia are culturally and historically important, and very interesting as the city had a very important role in American history and the foundation of the country’s independence. The Independence National Historical Park, known as America’s Most Historical Square Mile, is home to the broad plaza of Independence Mall, Independence Hall (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Centre.

Philadelphia International Airport is the biggest airport in Pennsylvania with flights from all over North America, Europe and the East.
