The largest parade in Philadelphia is the St Patrick’s Day Parade. 20,000 people take part in the parade from more than 150 groups including Irish associations, floats, dance groups, youth groups and marching bands. The parade takes place every year on the Sunday before St Patrick’s Day in March. The first St Patrick’s Day parade in Philadelphia took place in 1771 and there were 70,000 Irish immigrants living in Philadelphia by 1850. People dressed in green line the route to enjoy the religious and cultural celebrations.
Parade entrants can win a series of awards, including awards for the most outstanding float and the group that shows the spirit of the parade best.
