The Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh, PA
Visit Pittsburgh for its art festival
Many people think of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as a steel town but this once king of blue-collar labour in the United States is reinventing itself as an arts capital. In early June every year, the half century-old Three Rivers Arts Festival begins and continues for almost three weeks. With events for old and young alike, and costs from free to sky’s-the-limit, there’s something here for everyone.
Stop and watch artisans blow and mould hot glass into intricate shapes, take advantage of a free outdoor concert, or buy a large bunch of flowers for yourself or someone you love. Art is on display from children’s use of pavement chalk to beautiful oil paintings by very talented artists. The festival is spread through many venues, so you can take your time and visit several.
Point State Park, the Gateway Centre, the Cultural District, and Downtown are all locations that hold items of interest. Public transportation is available throughout the area, so you don’t need to worry about driving and parking if you don’t want to.
An artist’s market is open where the artists, often from all corners of the globe, will talk to visitors, explain what they do and how they do it, and sell their wares. This is the perfect chance to meet a favourite artist and have him or her autograph a new piece just for you. Admission to this destination's arts festival is free, and most of the programmes are free as well.
