The International Choral Festival of Preveza
The International Choral Festival of Preveza celebrates the music of the world’s finest choirs.
Every July, the small Greek town of Preveza plays host to both the International Choral Festival of Preveza and the International Competition of Sacred Music. Many fine choirs from Greece and throughout the world come to this destination in a celebration of choral music.
The International Choral Festival of Preveza begins with a street parade by all the participating choirs, followed by an opening ceremony presenting each choir.
The most important part of the International Choral Festival of Preveza, which has been taking place since the 1980s, is the competitive performances in which amateur choirs compete in concert halls.
The International Jury Committee, made up of at least three well-known Greek and/or foreign musicians, judge the competing choirs, awarding points for the technical and artistic qualities of each chosen piece as well as the overall quality of the performance and the choir’s connection with the audience.
Prize money, certificates and diplomas are handed out at a special closing ceremony, during which the choir selected by the International Jury Committee as the winner will perform.
Many kinds of choirs are invited to participate in the festival, with non-competitive concerts taking place throughout the area at open-air venues such as the Fortress of Preveza and the historic and ancient Auditorium of Nicopolis 'Odeon'.
Many famous choirs from all around the world have participated in the International Choral Festival of Preveza over the years.
