Sun, sea and Sand With a Volcanic Backdrop
A relaxing, enjoyable holiday on Tenerife’s northern coast.
Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands belonging to Spain, is usually best known as a destination for the huge tourist resorts of the south-west coast. Yet the north of the island has much to offer the visitor and provides a neat contrast to its brasher southern cousins.
The north houses the island’s capital, the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Much of the architecture is very attractive and it is a pleasant city to stroll around. The botanical gardens are worth a visit, with a magnificent collection of palm trees, and nightlife is noisy and vibrant as well as starting late in the evening.
Here in the capital, the second biggest carnival in the world takes place every February, providing a colourful and musical celebration of the island’s culture.
The main resort area of north Tenerife is Puerto de las Cruz where it is normal to see local people going about their daily lives. With the warm sea on the doorstep, there are plenty of water sport activities to try out. Entertainment at night consists of many restaurants, bars and clubs providing a lively evening atmosphere.
Exploring further afield, the interior of this destination is visually stunning, the island’s volcanic history leaving an awe-inspiring lunar landscape. Mount Teide is the dormant volcano in the centre of this national park, and its crater can be accessed either by a cable car or by a strenuous hike, suitable for experienced and very fit walkers. The surrounding landscape is also filled with plants and wildlife and is Spain’s most visited national park.
