The Tirgu Mures Festival of Lights
The Tirgu Mures Festival of Lights must be seen to be believed.
Tirgu Mures is located in the Mures River Valley, 346 kilometres from Bucharest and 480 kilometres from Belgrade. The city spreads out from the Fortress Church in the city centre which was built in the 14th century. This picturesque destination lies in the centre of Transylvania and extends onto both banks of the Mures River.
Tirgu Mures literally translates to mean ‘market on the Mures River’, and it has also been called the City of Roses. It has elements of both the Romanian and Hungarian cultures visible in its traditions and architecture. The surrounding villages have also yielded Roman relics, which attests to the area’s historical value.
For the tourist of today, however, Tirgu Mures features the world famous Festival of Lights, which is held every year on the 7th of December. The city comes alive with lights, theatrical acts, concerts and endless mugs of hot tea. The Festival of Lights featured 8,000 candles in 2010, and that number is set to increase to 12,000 candles beginning in 2011. There will also be acrobatics and performances by fire jugglers.
The Festival of Lights is organised by the National Romanian Scouts Organization; it began in 2005 in the nearby city of Cluj. Since then it has spread to Tirgu Mures, Miercurea Ciuc, Oradea, Timisoara, Targu Jiu, Tulcea and Suceava.
To see a city lit up with the light from thousands of candles will make any holiday to Tirgu Mures a wonderful and lasting memory.
