The Berlin Marathon
The Berlin Marathon is one the biggest and fastest marathons in the world.
The annual Berlin Marathon takes place on the last Sunday in September. The course starts and ends near the Brandenburg Gate and runs though this beautiful destination past the Charlottenburg Castle and the Tiergarten. With 40,000 runners and over a million spectators lining the streets, the Berlin Marathon is Germany’s biggest one-day sports event and one of the most popular road races in the world.
The Berlin Marathon has seen the most world records set for marathon running for both men and women because of the flat course and the even surface of the roads, as well as the usually mild autumn temperatures.
As well as the runners, the marathon also has races for inline skaters, power walkers, handbikers, children and wheelchair competitors, held on the same course on the Saturday.
Berlin has no particular centre and its attractions are all over the city. The main streets are Unter den Linten in the east of the city and the Kurfurstendamm in the west. The Tiergarten Park, Zoo and Aquarium are a popular destination for both tourists and Berliners alike. Alexanderplatz was the centre of East Berlin and has soviet architecture and a tall television tower. Unter den Linten, with the Brandenburg Gate at the west end and the Insel Museum and the bridge over the River Spree at the east, has a great many Prussian museums and monuments and is now recovering its identity as a major shopping area.
The main international airport in Berlin is Berlin Tegal Airport. It has flights arriving from many European cities.
