Strong year so far for Emirates

Emirates has reported strong performance for the first six months of its current financial year ending September 30th, with an 18 per cent increase in passenger figures.

A total of 13 million people travelled on the Dubai-based airline's services in this time.

The carrier also announced net profit of 752 million dirhams (£123 million), an increase of 165 per cent on its earnings during the corresponding period in 2008.

Emirates added eight aircraft to its fleet and launched flights to two new destinations this year, pursuing a strategy of investing in its business to get through the economic downturn.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of the airline, said: "Emirates remained focused on its long-term strategy despite the global economic slowdown.

"We have continued to invest in our eco-efficient aircraft fleet; in strengthening our global route network; and also in supporting the infrastructure for our growing business."

It was announced at the World Travel Market this week that the company will soon enable the use of BlackBerries onboard its aircraft.
