Women of all ages prefer to go on holiday with their female friends than alone, whereas men, once they hit a certain age, would rather travel solo, according to a new survey.
The study, conducted by Portman Building Society, has revealed that while 20 per cent of young people aged between 18 and 24 enjoy travelling with single sex friends, men choose not to continue with this later in their lives.
Figures show that just one per cent of men over the age of 55 are planning to head off on holiday with the lads in the next year, whereas ten per cent of women aged 65 plus said that they have most fun when they holiday with other women.
Helen Shaw, group communications manager at Portman Building Society, said: "The difference in holiday preferences between the sexes is quite surprising, with a significant proportion of men preferring to holiday alone or considering a quiet place to relax the most important.
"Perhaps there may be some truth to the stereotype of 'grumpy old men'?"
Nearly one in five of male respondents aged over 55 admitted they would prefer to holiday on their own.
According to USA Today the five top female-friendly travel destinations include
Amsterdam,
Ireland,
Costa Rica,
India and
Vietnam.
