A towering race in Spain

Holidaymakers heading to Spain this summer should not miss the spectacle of the Tall Ships' Race along the Mediterranean coast.

Taking place between July 4th and 7th in Alicante, the event's first race sees a fleet of more than 40 huge ships battle it out to be the first over the finish line before competing with each other on the way to Barcelona.

Travellers in Barcelona will then have the opportunity to glimpse the fleet between July 12th and 15th before it sails away to French waters.

First taking place in 1956, the race now consists of two events: a Baltic Tall Ships' Race and a Mediterranean Tall Ships' Race, with the latter travelling from Spain to France and Italy over the remainder of July.

The event celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and takes place every summer.
