Public votes for new Seven Wonders

Public votes for new Seven Wonders
A new list of the Seven Wonders of the World has been created following voting by more than 100 million people around the world.

In news likely to interest travellers with a thirst for history and culture, the voting for the New7Wonders campaign resulted in attractions such as the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal in India and the Colosseum in Italy being elected to the new list.

The four other sites to make the top seven consisted of Petra in Jordan, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, Machu Picchu in Peru and Chichen Itza in Mexico.

A lavish ceremony in Lisbon saw high-ranking officials and celebrities mingle as the results were announced to 50,000 spectators at the Benfica Stadium.

"The people of the world have created global memory - seven things that everyone will remember," commented Bernard Weber, founder and president of the New7Wonders Foundation.

Currently, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World include the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Colossus in Rhodes.
