Birmingham Airport (BHX) handled some 877,232 passengers in May, breaking all previous records for the month, it has been announced.
The figure, which comprised 625,770 scheduled passengers and 251,462 travellers on charter services, represented a 5.7 per cent increase on the previous year.
One of the biggest boosts to the airport's performance in May was the number of new route launches.
Holidaymakers travelling from Birmingham saw new flights commencing to
Hurghada,
Hamburg and
Warsaw, among others.
Routes outside
Europe saw an increase of 15.9 per cent in passenger numbers from Birmingham, while EU services carried 10.8 per cent more customers.
Charter destinations to see growth in May included
Austria,
Italy and
Egypt.
Joe Kelly, acting managing director at Birmingham, said: "Again we have seen another record-breaking month here at the airport and May has been extremely busy with a number of new routes launching from Birmingham, offering passengers an increasing range of destinations to choose from."
