Dutch airline
KLM is trialling a self-service baggage check-in scheme at Schiphol Airport in
Amsterdam.
Passengers departing from
Amsterdam with KLM can use a machine to board their bags provided they have checked in for their flight at a self-service kiosk or on the internet.
After placing their luggage in the machine, travellers scan their boarding pass and use a touchscreen to answer security questions. The bags are weighed and passengers are then provided with a label to attach to their suitcase.
An airport employee will check passports to ensure the luggage belongs to the passenger, but machines could have the capability to carry out this task in the future.
A spokeswoman for Amsterdam Schiphol Airport told Reuters that the six-month trial is the first of its kind in the world.
UK travellers can catch flights to Amsterdam from a number of locations, including
Gatwick Airport,
Manchester Airport and
Edinburgh Airport.
From its base at Schiphol Airport, KLM flies to destinations ranging from
New York to
Singapore.
