The
Singapore Tourism Board has released figures showing that the city state saw a 3.2 per cent year-on-year increase in visitors from the
UK in September.
There were some 34,000 arrivals from the UK, representing growth that was largely attributed to the Formula One night race that was held in
Singapore on September 28th.
Recent years have seen the UK become one of Singapore's most important source markets in
Europe, with more than 495,000 visitors in 2007.
Divya Panickar of the Singapore Tourism Board said: "Singapore is inspiring more travellers to visit by hosting world-class events such as the Grand Prix, which Singapore will host for the next four years, as well as undertaking a number of substantial development projects.
"2009 and 2010 will see the launch of two exciting integrated resorts – Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa – as well as Singapore's first reservoir in the city with a range of water-based activities."
In January 2009 Singapore will host the Volvo Ocean Race, serving as the fourth port in the event before the competitors continue to
Rio de Janeiro,
Boston,
Stockholm and other destinations.
The south-east Asian city state will make history in 2010 when it holds the inaugural Youth Olympic Games from August 14th to 26th.
