Holidaymakers planning
Christmas shopping trips have been urged to pay a visit to
New York City.
Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall said that, in many ways,
New York is "the ultimate city", as it caters for Christmas shoppers as well as people who want to experience some culture and entertainment.
"It's somewhere that goes beyond shopping, so it's great for three or four days, or even longer if you can spare it," he said.
Mr Hall also dismissed the idea that Christmas
city breaks in New York are only for wealthy people, saying there are plenty of cheap offers available.
"There are often very good value deals available out there at the moment, both for flights and hotels," he said.
"I think if people are in a position to travel, this is actually a good time to do so. The closer you get to Christmas, the more expensive it will get."
According to a recent report by the Post Office, many Christmas items can be bought for less in New York than in
London, despite the fact that the pound has recently dropped in value against the dollar.
