A live travel information system that is unique in the
UK airport network has been launched at
Southampton Airport.
Local dignitaries gathered at the airport on November 28th for the official launch of the system, which helps passengers with their onward journeys by providing transport updates on bus, ferry, rail and road networks in southern England.
Coming at a cost of £50,000, the technology derives data from an internet connection to offer regular travel information updates.
Southampton Airport has teamed up with a number of organisations and travel operators to provide the system, including the Highways Agency, South West Trains and ferry company Red Funnel.
Liberal Democrat MP Chris Huhne, who officially launched the technology, described Southampton Airport as the most "traveller-friendly" airport he had visited and said the information screens would further improve passenger experience at the hub.
David Lees, director of planning and development at the airport, added: "Southampton Airport has fantastic transport links, with the railway station next door, bus stops on our doorstep and the location of two major motorways within very close proximity.
"This investment in the latest technology will provide our passengers with live information, making it easier than ever before to breeze through Southampton Airport."
Flybe,
Air France and
Eastern Airways are among the major airlines operating from Southampton Airport, offering flights to destinations including
Amsterdam,
Paris and
Brussels.
