Virgin Atlantic to celebrate 25th year
Virgin Atlantic will celebrate its 25th birthday this year and is set to launch an advertising campaign and a number of special events to mark the occasion.
The £6 million promotional drive is designed to "beat off the credit crunch blues" and has at its centre a television advert set in 1984, the year of the airline's launch.
Flight attendants and pilots are shown boarding Virgin Atlantic's inaugural service to New York in the commercial, which also features iconic images of the 1980s such as the Rubik's Cube and the Asteroids video game.
Steve Ridgway, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, said the advertising campaign is part of the airline's fight against the "doom and gloom" in the aviation industry.
He also claimed that the carrier is currently offering some of its lowest fares ever and is looking to the future with optimism.
Since its launch in 1984, Virgin Atlantic has transported more than 65 million passengers to destinations all over the world.
It currently operates flights to 30 international locations from its bases at Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport with a fleet of Airbus A340 and Boeing 747 aircraft.
