Scotland wins 'best golf destination' award
Sports fans planning trips to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen or any other Scottish destination this year will be able to see the facilities on offer in the country that was voted the best golf holiday destination for 2009.
Scotland picked up the top accolade at Today's Golfer magazine's industry awards ahead of the Algarve in Portugal and Ireland, which were ranked second and third respectively.
Malcolm Roughead OBE, director of visitor engagement at VisitScotland, said he was "delighted" that Scotland had received the award.
He added: "Scotland is the home of golf and it provides golfers with the ultimate golfing experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.
"With the return of the Open Championship to Turnberry this year in July it is extremely important for us to capitalise on the opportunity this presents to promote Scotland as the number one golfing destination."
Scotland boasts more than 550 golf courses which are located all over the country.
It will host a number of major golf events this year, including the Open Championship at Turnberry in July and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in August.
