Sunday Times offers 'alternative city break' guide

Travellers looking for some new experiences this year can make use of a guide published in the Sunday Times reviewing the top alternative destinations for a romantic city break.

People who enjoy taking in architectural attractions on their holidays could head to Siena in Italy, which boasts the Torre del Mangia, the Piazza del Campo and other impressive structures.

Biarritz, France made it into the Sunday Times list for its relaxing appeal, while Seville, Spain was described as "sultry" and "perennially elegant".

Travellers planning to head past southern Europe and into northern Africa were advised to visit Fez, Morocco, which boasts an old town described as "a living museum", bustling markets and distinctive cuisine.

Food lovers may be interested in visiting Helsinki, Finland, which is putting Nordic cooking "on the global gastro-map", according to the Sunday Times.

Taste buds will also be treated in Brussels, a chocolate heaven that offers an alternative to Paris and boasts a picturesque city centre.

The Times also published a guide to the best destinations in Europe for a spa break recently, which included Paris, Geneva and Malaga.
