European flights prove popular at Birmingham Airport
Birmingham Airport has released its passenger figures for January, showing that there was a 3.5 per cent year-on-year increase in people catching flights to destinations in Europe during the month.
Alicante, Malaga and Palma proved popular among sun-seekers, as did Grenoble and Geneva with winter sports travellers.
In total, Birmingham Airport handled 561,648 passengers last month, which contributed to a 4.2 per cent year-on-year increase in the rolling 12-month period up to the end of January.
Paul Kehoe, the airport's managing director, said: "All the indications are that we are in for a challenging period ahead, with the airport not immune to the current pressures affecting the UK economy.
"However, with a growing portfolio of carriers and routes from Birmingham and with a final decision regarding our proposed runway extension due in the coming weeks, there is still a lot to look forward to."
Birmingham Airport saw its environmental credentials improved last month when SAS introduced the Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft, which is the most fuel-efficient plane in its class, on its route to Copenhagen.
