Australia has celebrated the fact that the state's South West region has been named one of the world's most desirable holiday destinations.
The area was the only Australian location on the list of the world's top ten regions compiled by Lonely Planet, which features in the company's new Best in Travel 2010 publication.
According to Tourism Western Australia, the South West boasts "the best nature can offer", from dense forests to pristine beaches.
A new bypass was recently opened that cuts 30 minutes off the time it takes to travel to the region from
Perth.
Sascha Papalia, a spokeswoman for the state tourist board, said: "It's excellent that Lonely Planet has recognised the whole of the South West region as significant from Harvey to Albany and from Bunbury to Margaret River.
"The region is a perfect blend of natural experiences such as beautiful beaches and tall timber forests combined with world class food, wine and boutique accommodation."
Travellers can catch flights to Perth with
Qantas,
Emirates,
Thai Airways and other carriers.
